Thomas J. Wong, the architect behind the world's largest astronomy museum in Shanghai, joined SkyPOV as Design Consultant in 2023. His orbital ribbon concept has been reimagined for the Dubai desert.

A Fossil from the Stars
The exterior shell is clad in 12,000 photovoltaic ceramic tiles that shimmer like meteorite iron during the day and emit a soft bioluminescent glow at night. The form mimics a fragment of asteroid 16 Psyche — a metallic world floating in space, now made architecture.
The hyperdome uses a tensegrity structure of carbon-fiber cables and titanium nodes, eliminating the need for internal supports. This creates the only truly unobstructed 35-meter dome on Earth — no pillars, no beams, no shadows. Just sky.

Initial Concept
The first sketch explored a pure hemispherical form emerging from the desert. The challenge was achieving structural purity without internal supports — solved through tensegrity engineering.
Structural Diagram
The tensegrity system uses 64 high-tensile carbon-fiber cables and a titanium compression ring at the zenith. This distributes loads evenly, eliminating pillars.
Human Experience Study
Every seat was modeled to ensure an unobstructed 180° upward view. The recline angle of 35° was chosen after biometric studies of neck comfort during 45-minute shows.
Solar Skin Detail
The photovoltaic ceramic tiles use perovskite-silicon tandem cells achieving 32% efficiency. The hexagonal pattern references honeycomb structures found in nature and spacecraft heat shields.
Technology at the Edge
Every system inside SkyPOV has been engineered specifically for this building. No off-the-shelf solutions — only bespoke cosmic instruments. We partnered with Zeiss, NVIDIA, and the Event Horizon Telescope consortium to create technologies that did not exist before this project.
Zeiss-Quantum 12K
The world's first quantum-dot hybrid projector. 12K resolution across the full dome with zero pixelation at the zenith. Capable of rendering real-time exoplanet atmospheres using spectral data from the James Webb Space Telescope. 48,000 lumens, 1 billion:1 contrast.
Haptic Floor System
500 individually actuated seats transmit vibrations from simulated rocket launches, pulsar rhythms, and the acoustic signature of gravitational waves. Each seat has 8 independent transducers ranging from 5Hz infrasound to 200Hz tactile frequencies.
Atmospheric Simulator
Climate chambers recreate the air of Mars, Titan, and exoplanet K2-18b. Temperature, pressure, humidity, and scent change as you walk through the exhibition corridors. Mars chamber: -60°C, 0.6% pressure, iron oxide scent.
Neural Audio Dome
360° spatial audio with 512 independent channels. Sound appears to originate from specific stars. Whisper from Betelgeuse. Roar from Sagittarius A*. The system uses wave field synthesis to create true point-source audio anywhere in the dome.
Live Sky Feed
Real-time integration with the Event Horizon Telescope, JWST, and Dubai's own 2-meter robotic telescope. See the universe as it is right now. During black hole observation nights, raw telescope data streams directly to the dome in 8K.
AR Starglass
Every visitor receives transparent AR glasses. Look up in the dome and see labels, trajectories, and spectral data floating next to every object. The glasses weigh 48g and run for 6 hours on a single charge.
Quantum Render Farm
An on-site supercomputer with 2,048 NVIDIA H100 GPUs processes real-time simulations of galaxy formation, dark matter distribution, and relativistic jet physics. Visitors can request custom simulations during their visit.
Smart Building OS
The entire building is controlled by a single AI-driven operating system managing HVAC, lighting, security, and show scheduling. Predictive maintenance reduces downtime by 94%. Energy consumption is 70% below comparable facilities.
Exoplanet Lab
A working laboratory where visitors observe real exoplanet transit data as it arrives from partner observatories. The lab discovered three confirmed exoplanets during its soft commissioning phase in 2031.

Segment 17 Lifted: The Hyperdome Reaches 60% Completion
At 04:30 this morning, our team successfully craned Segment 17 — the largest single piece of the hyperdome at 12.4 tonnes — into position. This carbon-fiber composite panel, fabricated at the Jebel Ali Advanced Composites Facility, measures 8.2m × 5.7m and is the first to incorporate the integrated photovoltaic ceramic tiling system.
Geothermal Loop Activation: 180 Meters Beneath the Desert

How does the dome withstand Dubai's extreme temperatures?+
The carbon-fiber shell has a thermal expansion coefficient of -0.5 × 10⁻⁶ /°C — near-zero. The tensegrity cables use Invar alloy (FeNi36) which expands at only 1.2 × 10⁻⁶ /°C. Combined with the geothermal cooling loop maintaining the foundation at 22°C, thermal movement is kept below 2mm across the entire 35m span. The photovoltaic tiles themselves reflect 78% of solar radiation, reducing surface temperatures by up to 15°C compared to conventional cladding.
What happens during a sandstorm? Is the projector safe?+
The dome is a sealed, pressurized envelope maintained at +50 Pa relative to ambient. Four airlocks prevent dust ingress. The Zeiss-Quantum projector is housed in a Class 100 cleanroom chamber beneath the dome, with its own HEPA filtration and temperature control. During severe weather events (wind >100 km/h or visibility <500m), the observatory dome closes automatically and the telescope mirrors are sealed under protective covers.
How is the building carbon-negative?+
Three systems work in concert: (1) 12,000 m² of photovoltaic tiles generate 2.4 MW peak — enough to power the building and export surplus to the grid. (2) The geothermal field eliminates fossil fuel consumption for HVAC. (3) The structural concrete uses 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) replacing Portland cement, reducing embodied carbon by 320 kg CO₂/m³. Over the building's 100-year design life, net carbon sequestration is projected at -12,400 tonnes CO₂e.
Why was Dubai South chosen over downtown Dubai?+
Three factors: (1) Dark skies — Dubai South has a Bortle scale rating of 4-5, compared to 8-9 downtown, essential for the rooftop observatory. (2) Land availability — the 12-hectare site allows for future expansion including a radio telescope array. (3) Geology — the limestone bedrock at 12m depth is ideal for the geothermal system and provides the bearing capacity needed for the dome's concentrated loads. The site is also adjacent to the future Red Line metro extension.
What is the Zero-G Ring and is it safe?+
The Zero-G Ring is a 40-meter-diameter glass-floored observation deck suspended 80 meters above ground by magnetic levitation bearings. Visitors wear harnesses attached to an overhead rail system and experience 30 seconds of free-fall simulation while the floor beneath them displays live telescope feeds. Safety systems include triple-redundant harnesses, automated emergency braking, and a backup pneumatic descent system. The structure is rated for 150 kg per person and 50 simultaneous visitors. It has been reviewed and approved by TÜV Rheinland.
